General Information on the Gambier
and Pitcairn Islands

The subtropical Pitcairn/Gambier region is located along the Tropic of Capricorn (23° South latitude). This gives a perfect climate with temperatures ranging from 20 ° to 30 ° C.

The Gambier Islands (the largest of which is Mangareva Island, population 800) are often referred to as the “Forgotten Isles”. They are the most distant (approx. 1600 km) of all the French Polynesian Islands from Tahiti and are serviced by Air Tahiti flights only once a week (on Tuesdays). Being a large group of high islands in a picturesque lagoon they represent a true “South Pacific Paradise”.

For the serious traveler, searching for a tropical island that surpasses the picturesque quality of Bora Bora, but without the thousands of other tourists blocking the view, then the Gambier Group is a ‘must do’.

The four islands of the Pitcairn Group are governed as overseas territories by the UK. Only Pitcairn is inhabited, with nearby Henderson Island being a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is considered by scientists to be the most pristine tropical island in the world.

Pitcairn is perhaps best known as home to the descendants of the infamous HMS Bounty mutineers. The history surrounding the mutiny is fascinating and, to this day, still remains much of a mystery. For further information on Pitcairn and Henderson visit our Links Page

As a result of its famous history and its abundant flora and fauna, lots of research has been done on the people, history and the nature inhabiting these islands and their surrounding waters. If you search the internet
(www.google.com) plenty of information is available to spice up your travel taste buds.
